Dancer Sophia Wekesa, specialising in dancehall and other street dance genres, has been appointed to strenghten Tanssin talo’s multi-professional Advisory Board.
“I’m interested in exploring how Tanssin talo could be as inclusive as possible and accommodate intersectional viewpoints,” Wekesa says.
She continues that, as a dancer focusing especially on dancehall, she is often forced to consider whether she and other street dancers can have access to various venues.
“I sincerely hope that Tanssin talo would provide a venue where dancers and movers from different backgrounds can meet. When different dancers and dance world platforms come together, many good things can happen,” Wekesa says with confidence.
The aim of the Advisory Board is to bring an outside perspective to the planning of Tanssin talo’s activities. The intention is to develop Tanssin talo into an even better and more attractive place for diverse audiences and dance professionals. The work is strongly focused on the future.
“More diversity was called for in the Advisory Board. The feedback was justified and we realised that more members were needed. Sophia combines a strong background in dance and a broad understanding of practices and measures that enhance inclusiveness,” says Matti Numminen, Director of Tanssin talo.
